STARTVAC® Launching in Japan

In May 2016 Kyoritsu Seiyaku and HIPRA organized STARTVAC® launching in Japan. Events were organized in 5 different locations across Japanese islands gathering almost 600 vets and professionals. During events well- recognized international Key Opinion Leaders Paolo Moroni (US) and Andrew Bradley (UK) gave presentation about contagious and environmental mastitis with special focus on preventive measures like vaccination.

Moreover Japanese Key Opinion Leaders explained to the audience the prevalence of pathogens in Japan, the importance of bovine mastitis and its expected losses for dairy industry. According to the investigation report by the National Agricultural Insurance Association, mastitis is the most common disease among total number of milking cows in Japan.

The actual number of mastitis is 430,000 and it has accounted for 30.4% of the disease overall. In a recent Japanese study, the costs for mastitis (clinical and subclinical) were estimated at 50,000 JPY (=510 USD, =380 EUR) per cow present on a farm per year.

It is worth to mention that STARTVAC® is the first and only vaccine against bovine mastitis registered by Japanese authorities. Being a part of such a great event, HIPRA reinforces its commitment to improving milk quality in Japan.
